Severe Weather Spotter Training

The National Weather Service (NWS) encourages anyone with an interest in public service to join the SKYWARN® program for basic weather spotter training. Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches and nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become a spotter. Ready to learn more? Find a class in your area. Training is free and typically lasts about 2 hours. 

During this training event, you will learn:

  • Basics of thunderstorm development
  • Fundamentals of storm structure
  • Identifying potential severe weather features
  • Information to report
  • How to report information
  • Basic severe weather safety

NWS Basic Spotter training will be conducted at the Oak Forest City Hall, 15440 Central Ave, Oak Forest, IL 60452 on Friday April 26, 2019 at 7:15 PM.  If the Main entrance is locked, please enter via the Police Department entrance and turn right inside the building to find the Chamber Hall (just past the gate).  If you have any questions feel free to contact Dave Bukowski at N9KPD@ARRL.NET or call 708.252.3283.
