Officer Reid accepts James P. Morrissy Award


On January 31, Oak Forest Police Chief Greg Anderson (center) and Mayor Hank Kuspa presented Officer Jason Reid with the James P. Morrissy Award at the inaugural First Responders Awards Ceremony at Chicago Gaelic Park. Reid was nominated by his peers for his passion for law enforcement, his willingness to go outside his comfort zone, his belief in public service, and his desire to make a difference in the community.

The Oak Forest Police Department has received numerous reports about an ongoing telephone scam in which someone calls claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.  Please be aware of this telephone scam and share the information with friends, family and neighbors. Never give personal information or money over the phone to unknown callers.

Illinois EPA no longer sending emission test notices


Amid the Illinois budget crisis, the state Environmental Protection Agency is no longer sending out emissions test notices to vehicle owners, according to ABC7 Chicago.  The Secretary of State is still sending out electronic notices for both the the plate renewal, which includes information about whether or not a Vehicles Emissions Test is required before the vehicle' registration can be renewed. The Illinois EPA is exploring options for electronic emissions notifications, including possibly consolidating the notifications with the Secretary of State's Office.

Are you registered to vote?


February 16 is the last day to register to vote for the presidential primary election. Voter registration is conducted in the City Clerk's Office at City Hall during regular business hours. Applicants must bring in two forms of ID, both with signatures and current address.

Residents, businesses to receive new water meters


The City of Oak Forest is upgrading its water meters to ensure more accurate readings.  All residents and businesses will receive new water meters within the next 12 months, including those who already have a remote read meter.   Once the upgrade is complete, all water meters will be remotely read.  Residents will receive a letter from the city with instructions to call M.E Simpson to schedule an appointment for installation.  The installation process should take less than 30 minutes.

Street Art Commission meets Monday


Alderman Diane Wolf invites residents to the Street Art Commission’s first meeting on Monday, February 8 at City Hall. The commission’s objective is to help beautify Oak Forest and create a more interesting physical environment for citizens to enjoy. The commission’s first project, Opportunity Knocks, featured colorful doors by local artists at the northwest corner of 159th and Cicero Avenue.

Learn what's going on at next week's City Council meeting


The City Council will meet on Tuesday, February 9 at 8 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.  Citizens are invited to attend City Council meetings and are welcome to participate at the designated time.

City Hall is closed tomorrow


City Hall is closed Saturday, February 6.  During non-business hours, please use the night deposit mail slot at City Hall, pay parking or ordinance tickets online or sign up for online water bill payments.

Acorn Public Library provides books and eBooks, programming, movies, music, electronic research tools, and computer access to the public. Stop in to borrow a book or take part in one or all of the planned special events in February.

If you are a cable television subscriber, you can view the Community Information Channel (CIC-TV) on Comcast channel 19, Wide Open West channel 6 and AT&T U-verse channel 99 to learn more about city programs and events.  If you do not subscribe to cable television, you can watch Committee of the Whole and City Council meetings online or check out the DVDs at Acorn Public Library.
