OFFD offers winter fire safety tips


More fires happen in the winter months than any other time of the year. During the cold months, we spend more time indoors and use different methods to heat our homes. It is important to keep fire safety in mind when you are heating your home.

Why does my tap water look cloudy?


Once in a while, you get a glass of water and it looks cloudy; maybe milky is a better term.  After a few seconds it miraculously clears up!  Cloudy water can occur when the water temperature of Lake Michigan, our water source, drops below 40 degrees.

Winter weather reminders


It’s that time of year!  Please remember that the city prohibits residents from parking vehicles on city streets after 2 inches of snow has fallen so that Public Works crews can clear and salt the streets effectively and efficiently. 

City seeking applicants for telecommunicator


The Civil Service Commission of the City of Oak Forest is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of emergency telecommunicator.  Applications are available at City Hall ($35, non-refundable) and are due to the Human Resources Office no later than 3 p.m. on February 3.

City extends application deadline for community development director position


The Community and Economic Development Director can expect to work on expanding the city’s vitality and momentum through business recruitment and retention and guide an engaged and supportive residential and business community. The director is recommended by the city administrator and appointed by the mayor and City Council. If interested, please submit an application, résumé, cover letter, and professional references by February 10 to Human Resource Manager Dorienne Preer at dpreer@oak-forest.org. Questions? Edizon Dayao returns to the senior luncheon


Back by popular demand, singer Edizon Dayao will be at the January 26 senior lunch at 11 a.m. at the Community Center.  Edizon will be making magic on the keyboard, bringing the sounds of a tropical luau to help us warm during this cold Chicago winter.

Explorers and Citizens Police Academy
On January 10, Mayor Hank Kuspa and the City Council recognized the Oak Forest High School students who serve in the police department's Explorers Program and the recent graduates of the department's Citizens Police Academy.  Thank you to all of the participants for their dedication and commitment to the City of Oak Forest.

City Hall will be closed Saturday, open on Monday


City Hall will be closed tomorrow; however, it will be open on Monday, January 16 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day).  Garbage pickup will be on schedule next week.

If you are a cable television subscriber, you can view the Community Information Channel (CIC-TV) on Comcast channel 19, Wide Open West channel 6 and AT&T U-verse channel 99 to learn more about city programs and events.  If you do not subscribe to cable television, you can watch Committee of the Whole and City Council meetings online or check out the DVDs at Acorn Public Library.
