City upgrades street lighting

The LED street lighting upgrade project on Cicero Avenue is underway. The Public Works Department's Street Division is replacing old 455 watt metal halide/mercury vapor (blue/white light) and high pressure sodium (orange light) street light fixtures with new energy efficient 106 watt LED lights from 149th Street to 159th Street. The new LED lighting will provide a uniform look and presentation that will greatly enhance nighttime visibility through these commercial corridors and reduce energy usage by 75 percent. The department also is working to convert 98 residential streetlights and the Arbor Park commuter lot to LED lighting. The lighting projects, which cost $109,800 are being funded by Public Sector Energy Efficiency grants administered by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus.
