Oak Forest Animal Control: SkunksSkunks are nocturnal and active all year round, more so in February to early March which is mating season. The kits are born in April or May. Skunks are generally gentle creatures and spraying is the last resort if they feel threatened or if they are defending their young. They are excellent diggers! If you suspect a skunk is living on your property, here are some things you can do to deter it. - Keep your trash bins properly closed. You can also use bungie cords to hold down the lid.
- If you find a den the skunk is going in and out of, while it is away, fill the hole back up with dirt, rocks, or wood. You can also use fencing around the perimeter of your patio if its home is underneath once the skunk is gone.
- Install motion detector lights or motion sensing sprinklers in your yard.
- Spread orange or lemon peels under your patio or porch or anywhere you think a skunk has taken up residence around your home. This is a natural deterrent.
- You should avoid sealing holes in the spring and summer when animals are raising their young unless you are ABSOLUTELY certain that there are no babies inside.
- If you cannot be certain, wait to take action until any possible youngsters are grown and have struck out on their own.
- NEVER, EVER approach a den where the mother is present with her young. If feeling compelled to defend her offspring, a mother skunk or raccoon can be DANGEROUS
For more information on Skunks, email the Animal Control Officer Melissa Drozd at mdrozd@oak-forest.org
