Oak Forest Animal Control: Raccoons

Oak Forest Animal Control: Raccoons

Raccoons are very intelligent! Seen mostly at night but can be seen napping during the day or foraging. Do not feed raccoons! Feeding them can create undesirable situations for you, your children and neighbors. Females give birth to kits in April or May. They become independent at 12 to 14 years of age and develop amazing dexterity that allows them to open doors, jars, and latches. If you’ve witnessed a raccoon “washing” its food in water, it’s actually sensing its object with its hands. They have more touch receptors in their hands than they do feet. If you do not want raccoons on your patio or porch, empty water bowls before dusk or any free-standing water that’s in a flower pot or tote bin. This will also ensure mosquitos do not lay eggs in standing water.

  • Keep your trash bins properly closed. You can also use bungie cords to hold down the lid.

  • Do not leave pet food out overnight.

  • Repair holes and close all openings to attic.

  • Install motion detector lights or motion sensor sprinklers in your yard.

For more information on raccoons or wildlife in our area, please email the Animal Control Officer at mdrozd@oak-forest.org.

For more information about raccoons visit the University of Illinois Extention Wildlife Directory.

Yard Waste Pick-up Has Begun!

As of April 1, yard waste can be placed curbside on your scheduled garage day. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, branches, etc. (no dirt or rock). Branches should be cut into 3- to 4-foot lengths and be no wider than 6 inches in diameter.

Place yard waste in brown paper yard waste bags, put in reasonable-sized bundles tied with twine or string, or an HDS yard waste cart. If you don't have one, you can rent the large 95-gallon wheeled yard waste carts from HDS. Visit
www.mydisposal.com/cart-form-oak-forest for cart requests.

"Yard waste only" stickers are only needed when the regular 35-gallon garbage can is used for yard waste. Stickers are available at City Hall.

Clean-Up Week is April 23 - 27!
