Feral Cats
Are you noticing stray cats around Oak Forest? Most of them are feral; some of them are owned and just lost. A feral cat is a cat that lives outdoors with little to no human contact. They normally run away from humans but will become familiar if they are fed by humans.
A female cat can become pregnant as early as 5 months of age and have a few litters a year. The population in feral cats increases without spay or neutering. Colonies are developed out of need for territory. They can live just about anywhere, including areas around your home. They may feed on scraps left in dumpsters or your garbage cans. They may also eat any food you leave out for wildlife such as seed or fruits for birds.
Nuisance issues are a concern for some residents such as urinating and defecating on a person’s lawn. Luckily Oak Forest Animal Control works with an assistance program called Triple R Pets to reduce the number of ferals born in our town.
Triple R Pets is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) approved organization dedicated to trapping, neutering, and returning cats to the environment. It is the humane proven solution in controlling the feral cat population.
