I Am An American Day Parade

Spend Labor Day Sunday with us!


The Oak Forest Veterans Commission will host the 4th Annual I Am An American Day Parade on Sunday, September 6 at 11 a.m. on Central Avenue between 151st Street and 156th Street.  The patriotic parade will lead to the Oak Forest Park District’s Old Times Picnic, a fun-filled event for all ages that has become an Oak Forest tradition.

Decorate your bike at the farmers market tomorrow 


Decorate your bike, scooter, or stroller to ride in the I Am An American Day Parade on Saturday at the farmers market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the train station. Decorations will be supplied by the Oak Forest Park District while supplies last. 

Be sure to stick around for Mrs. Brenda's Story Club starts at 10 a.m. The Oak Forest Fire Department also will make an appearance from 10 a.m. to noon. Join them for stories and fun!

Residents invited to public meeting to discuss mowing of forest preserve land


The City of Oak Forest will hold a public meeting at City Hall on Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. with representatives of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC) to discuss the prohibition against Oak Forest residents mowing forest preserve land that lies next to their homes.

Recently, the Public Works Department has been receiving a number of calls about leaves turning brown and falling of trees.  Leaf scorch is commonly seen in Illinois during the hot, dry summer months.

Learn what’s going on at upcoming council meetings 


The City Council will meet on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall for a Committee of the Whole meeting.  The City Council also will meet at 8 p.m. in Council Chambers for its regularly scheduled meeting.  Citizens are invited to attend both meetings and are welcome to participate at the designated times.

Labor Day reminders: City Hall closed, garbage delayed


City Hall will be closed on Saturday and Monday for the holiday. Also, garbage pickup will be delayed one day next week.

If you are a cable television subscriber, you can view the Community Information Channel (CIC-TV) on Comcast channel 19, Wide Open West channel 6 and AT&T U-verse channel 99 to learn more about city programs and events.  If you do not subscribe to cable television, you can watch Committee of the Whole and City Council meetings online or check out the DVDs at Acorn Public Library.
