The Oak Forest Police Department congratulates Sergeant Ryan Burnett on his graduation from the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University. Sergeant Burnett successfully completed the 10-week program on August 17, 2018. “I am extremely proud of the effort and commitment that Sergeant Burnett demonstrated during this course of study,” said Oak Forest Police Chief Tim Kristin. ‘It will help him continue to do his job at a very high, professional level.”
The School of Police Staff and Command was created by the Center for Public Safety in 1983 to provide upper-level college instruction in a total of 22 core or mandatory blocks of instruction. The major topics of study include: Management and Management Theory, Organizational Behavior, Human Resources for Law Enforcement, Budgeting, Staffing Allocation, and Personnel Deployment. Each student is academically challenged through a total of 18 written examinations, projects and quizzes in addition to two research papers that are required as part of the curriculum. Upon successful completion, students may be awarded a total of eight units of undergraduate credit from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the law enforcement community. Since its inception, the center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of police training, management training, and executive development.
Honorable Mayor Henry L. Kuspa attended the commencement ceremony with Chief Kristin. The Oak Forest Police Department will be sending two more officers to the School of Police Staff and Command in September. This class is being hosted by the Oak Forest Police Department in conjunction with the South Suburban College campus located in Oak Forest.
