Bremen Township is open for tax appeals

Tax appeals

Bremen Township is open for reassessment appeals for the City of Oak Forest until October 2. Residents can pick up appeal forms at City Hall. The forms should be completed and delivered to a Cook County Courthouse or the Bremen Township Assessor's Office at 16361 S. Kedzie Avenue. Please do not drop off completed forms at City Hall.  If you need help completing your form, please contact Taxpayer Advocate Grace Bardusk at 708-444-4816 or gbardusk@oak-forest.org.  She will accommodate as many requests as possible, in the order they are made (by phone or email), by September 27.

Learn more about the appeals process and/or file online.

Seniors must apply for Senior Freeze Exemption

Senior citizens who receive the Senior Freeze Exemption from the Cook County Assessor’s Office may have noticed that their assessed valuation – the dollar value assigned to a home for property tax purposes – has changed on their most recent reassessment notices.  As the Senior Freeze Exemption is intended to freeze the assessed valuation, not the taxes, this seems to be an error on the reassessment notice.  Bardusk has reached out to the Cook County Assessor’s Office to find out.

In the meantime, it is extremely important that all seniors who receive the Senior Freeze Exemption complete the necessary paperwork.  During the pandemic, the exemption was renewed automatically; however, the Cook County Assessor’s Office once again requires seniors to complete the form annually.  To be sure you receive the exemption, you should complete the form – even if you completed it in March.   Although the deadline has passed, the Cook County Assessor’s Office will accept the forms.

For more information, please contact Bardusk at 708-444-4816 or gbardusk@oak-forest.org.

Attend the Property Tax Assistance Workshop on September 27

The Cook County Assessor is hosting a Property Tax Assistance Workshop on Wednesday, September 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bremen Township Senior Complex at 15350 Oak Park Avenue. The workshop will provide an opportunity to determine if an appeal should be filed, an overview of the online application, and teach homeowners about available property tax savings.  Additionally, property owners should stop by the Bremen Township Assessor's Office at 16361 S. Kedzie with any questions they may have and/or to file an appeal in-person.
